Every week we meet a new crew of transition year students from Skibbereen Community School and I wonder just how we can go from great to greater. The kindness, care, compassion and caring ways displayed this week by the 6 transition year students was just phenomenal. You wonder as a society where we live in and listen to on a regular basis about our youth in the community, we at SRCC can only praise highly the students who come through our doors, your parents and school should feel very proud of you. We pause and reflect regularly at SRCC and remind ourselves of just how grateful we truly are to the wonderful people in our community for the time they give to visiting our residents. It is very much appreciated and we thank you all very much 👏🏻. This week saw another wonderful group of transition year students from Skibbereen Community School visit us, their huge smiles once they entered our front doors would brighten anyone’s day, they are a credit to their families, their school and the community and ye should feel very proud of yourselves. We also had a visit from The ‘Amazing Grace Community Church Choir’, they also came in with beaming smiles for everyone and their beautiful singing and music enhanced this even more. Thank you to each and every one of you for giving of your time, it is very much appreciated. In a world which is ever changing today, we are very fortunate to live amongst the most kind hearted people. It is important to reflect at times on this and to remind ourselves of just how lucky we truly are. We are very excited here at SRCC as the first 4 transition year recruits of 2026 from Skibbereen Community School arrived. The girls were courteous, kind and caring towards our residents and they demonstrated huge enthusiasm throughout their morning with us. We highly commend these 4 students for their interaction and willingness to learn during this time. Our residents truly love the presence of the youth and we look forward to lots of interaction during the coming school year ahead. As we find ourselves easing gently into Autumn with more cooling temperatures and shorter evenings, one might only wonder if we as individuals will make changes to our own lives like the seasons do. Small changes of course may be evident like adding another layer of clothing or changes to our eating habits after a long hot summer of salads and snacks to more comforting hot food. Many find themselves reflecting at this time of year and exploring the possibilities of taking up a new course or doing something new and interesting for themselves which is a very positive and healthy outlook to have in life. New challenges are the key word which comes to my mind as recently at SRCC I have noticed a shift in our residents and their enthusiasm to try, start and begin something new. Large numbers attending daily activities, making new friends and having the fun are exactly what a new season and beginnings are all about. 100% praise to all our wonderful residents for trying something new and which may be out of their comfort zone. Question now is what will you be trying and investigating new for yourself? No matter how big or small, at least you will have tried. After a wonderful Nursing Homes Week gone by and observing our residents engagement and ability to try new things….this has now lead us to very new areas of interest. Combined materials, personal artwork, exploration of gardening through a different and creative lens and much more. The possibilities are endless and very beautiful. Every day at SRCC we encourage and open new doors and avenues for our residents enabling them to either continue with there love for a particular area which they do or encourage new opportunities for them in a particular direction they are aiming towards. So today is Sunday 16th August….it’s a little damper than our previous days but that’s ok too. We have had a wonderful Summer filled with beautiful sunshine, barbecues, ice cream truck visits, outings including the annual agricultural show, music and smoothie sessions in the garden, many walks throughout our retirement village and the list goes on and we’re not done yet 😅. We have all heard the saying ‘When in Rome, do as the Romans do’…..We have certainly committed to doing this and on any given day the sun shines, you will 100% see us out in it. If there’s a lesson to be learned in all of this it’s to just do it, try not to stress over what your going to do because the hardest part in doing something new is overthinking in advance of doing it. Once you have started or jumped into it your there. Overthinking sometimes is the biggest hindrance and liability to any one of us. So yes the message is ‘JUST DO IT’ 👏🏻☀️. We live in an ever changing world today and perhaps it is one which many may not recognise. We chat daily here at SRCC with our residents about times gone by, the innocence of how the world used to be and where everyone just got on with their chores and how simple life was. It is lovely to reminisce and remind ourselves of the beautiful place we grew up in where such simple times had actually granted us a chance of being the most special people in the world. We feel so lucky at SRCC to be in a position to relive all these wonderful times whenever we choose. Being kind, caring, considerate of others and most of all looking out for each other is key to living our lives to the fullest.
